Split system running costs in Melbourne: cooling and heating

A split system’s purchase price is a one-off; its running cost turns up on every bill for the next decade. The good news: modern split systems are among the most efficient ways to cool — and heat — a Melbourne home. Here’s roughly what to expect, and what keeps the numbers down. Why split systems are cheap to run

Split systems are heat pumps: rather than generating heat or cold, they move heat between inside and outside. That’s why they can deliver several kilowatts of cooling or heating for each kilowatt of electricity they draw — a ratio the industry calls COP or EER, and which for modern units typically sits in the 3-to-4 range. Every other form of electric heating tops out at a ratio of 1.

Rough cooling costs

A 2.5 kW bedroom unit typically draws somewhere around 0.6–0.8 kW of electricity while cooling. At Melbourne electricity rates in the vicinity of 30 cents per kWh, that’s roughly 20–25 cents an hour. A 7.1 kW living-area unit might draw around 2 kW — call it about 60 cents an hour at the same rate. An evening of cooling costs less than most people assume; it’s running an undersized unit flat-out all day that hurts, which is why sizing matters as much as efficiency ratings.

Heating with your split system

Reverse-cycle split systems heat with the same heat-pump advantage, which is why they’re typically among the cheapest ways to heat a Melbourne room — usually well ahead of plug-in electric heaters, and competitive with ducted gas for zone heating a single space. What quietly inflates running costs

• Wrong sizing. Undersized units run flat-out; heavily oversized units short-cycle. Both waste power.
• Extreme set points. Every degree lower in summer costs meaningfully more. Around 24–25° in summer and 19–20° in winter is the comfortable-and-sane zone.
